Mileage fees, higher gas tax among options to fund Michigan’s crumbling roads |
How much is needed: In order to maintain its road system in the coming years, Michigan will need to come up with another almost $4 billion in infrastructure funding annually. Michigan’s goal is to have 90% of its roads in good or fair condition. That last happened in 2008. Last month, the MITA published a report detailing estimates from the consulting group on the cost of maintaining Michigan’s road network and potential options for raising additional income. More in public interest: Girls younger than 18 are more likely to be sentenced to confinement in Michigan than most U.S. states, recently released data shows. |

Why Michigan is seeing Northern Lights more often |
Since the start of 2023, Michigan has been treated to several incredible aurora displays, with some stretching south into places the Northern Lights are rarely seen. Nearly every few weeks, it seems, social media newsfeeds have been flooded with fresh aurora photos. Good news for those hoping to catch a glimpse: These sightings will only continue to increase in frequency and strength in the coming two years, thanks to a phenomenon called the solar cycle. In weather: A researcher has identified a particular rain pattern possible this summer. The pattern is based on this being what we are calling a “transition summer” which could lead to more rain. |

Reflecting on how the NFL Draft went for the Lions |
The players: We welcomed a lot of players to Detroit over the weekend. Here's 5 things to know about Jack Campbell, Jahmyr Gibbs, Brian Branch, Sam LaPorta, Brodric Martin, Hendon Hooker, Colby Sorsdal, Antoine Green. What's being said nationally: Now that the 2023 NFL draft is officially complete, it’s arguable that outside of the Philadelphia Eagles, no team turned more heads than the Detroit Lions for a few different reasons. And here are the NFC North winners and losers from the 2023 NFL draft. A way-to-soon depth chart: The Lions added more top-68 draft picks than any other team in the league, and all of those guys not named Hendon Hooker should contribute for this team in the fall. But how many will crack the Week 1 lineup? |

‘If trees had feet’: Tree migration brings climate resiliency to Michigan forests |
Trying to build resilience: Conservation groups and tribal experts are testing which more southerly tree species may thrive further north to face the challenges of climate change, woodland disease, and invasive species. "We can't save our trees": A Consumers Energy pipeline project is cutting down trees that are sentimental to Chelsea-area property owners, Kathy and Jim Callery. Still growing strong: The apple crop in West and Southwest Michigan has survived the recent spring frost and large temperature swings largely unscathed. |
