U.S. military launches PFAS task force
 
Activists have been lamenting the seemingly slow pace of cleaning up the former Wurtsmith Air Force Base in Oscoda. The site is polluted with PFAS, which has been leaking into the surrounding waterways. In fact, the community has some of the highest levels of PFAS ever recorded in fish. However, developments this week on the federal level could spark action on the cleanup front. In one of the first moves of his tenure, the new U.S. Secretary of Defense announced a PFAS task force. MORE

Presidential contenders sound off at NAACP convention in Detroit
 
Democratic presidential primary front-runners and the lone Republican candidate running against President Donald Trump took part in a candidate forum Wednesday at Cobo Center in downtown Detroit. The forum highlighted the final day of the NAACP's national convention. Among the topics discussed, several expressed concern over Trump's 'racist' rhetoric, student loan debt and preventing racial discrimination at the ballot box.

Craft beer industry is booming in Michigan
 
Michigan brewers are bucking the national dip in production. While beer production nationally is down 12% from 2017 to 2018, it actually is up 10% during that same time in Michigan. A couple of factors are at play here. We've got nearly 400 breweries and brewpubs across the state. Michigan's largest breweries - Bell's Brewery in Kalamazoo and Founders Brewing Co. in Grand Rapids - continue to expand their footprint. At the same time, the national big boys (think MillerCoors and Anheuser-Busch) drastically have reduced their production. MORE

Bay City Northwest holds on for first Little League state title since 1952

Whoever says baseball is dead should have been in Mt. Pleasant the past few days. The Michigan Little League held its annual Major Baseball state tournament. And for the first time in 67 years, Bay City Northwest claimed the title against upstart Beach, a team out of Fruitport. Bay City now heads on to regional play for a chance to advance to the Little League World Series. (Yup, the one you see every year on ESPN.) Congrats, boys! MORE
