Michigan can't escape water issues: From Miss America, to movies to PFAS in another river
Emily Sioma knew she hadn't made the cut for the top 15 during Sunday's Miss America competition. She knew she only had a brief window on the national stage. So she ran with it, bringing light to Michigan's water issues during her 8-second introduction: "From the state with 84 percent of the U.S. fresh water, but none for its residents to drink, I am Miss Michigan Emily Sioma." Some lauded her. Some chided her. Either way, our state's water issues were front and center for the nation to see. A day later, Michael Moore premiered his latest film "Fahrenheit 11/9," which includes scenes tied to the Flint water crisis. Completing the triad of water woes, the state released a report Monday showing high concentrations of PFAS in the Kalamazoo River. MORE

10 things to know about deer hunting in Michigan

Deer hunting is a big deal in Michigan, but maybe not as much as it once was. The number of hunters in our state peaked in the 1960s, when an average of around 850,000 annually purchased a hunting license. Last year, 620,932 licenses to hunt deer were sold. (The sate estimates about 574,000 actually were used.) Deer hunting season begins Sept. 22, but the regular firearms deer season doesn't run until Nov. 15-30. MORE

Lions, Patricia humiliated on national TV in season-opening loss
hat
That. Was. Brutal. The Detroit Lions opened the Matt Patricia era with a clunker Monday against the visiting New York Jets. It is hard to imagine things going any worse than they did in the 48-17 stinker. Mathew Stafford threw four interceptions. The "revamped" offense rushed for a measly 39 yards. The defense couldn't stop a rookie quarterback. The special teams allowed a punt return touchdown. Lions fans were justifiably in boo-bird mode by the end, while the visitors were in full on J-E-T-S! mode. No doubt our Lions beat writers Kyle Meinke and Nate Atkins will have plenty to write about this week. MORE

Michigan town celebrates being inspiration for new Jack Black movie

The city of Marshall nearly was named Michigan's state capitol. Of course, that honor eventually went to Lansing, and Marshall stayed a small town. However, it is a small town with a lovely historic district featuring some of the best 19th-century American architecture. Those houses provided the inspiration of a critically acclaimed 1973 children's novel, "The House with a Clock in its Walls." Later this month, a movie by the same name starring Jack Black and Cate Blanchett hits theaters. MORE
