Deep mud pit becomes death trap for multiple moose on Michigan's Isle Royale

At least four moose have died in a deep mud pit on Isle Royale, according to researchers. The mud pit is the result of a broken beaver dam and a draining lake. There are currently about 1,600 moose on the island, researchers have said, and some are concerned with the possibility of overpopulation. Following an effort to trap wolves in other areas and release them on the island, a dozen wolves are now living on Isle Royale and evidence of moose killed by the wolves has been located by the researchers. These moose, though, succumbed to a different fate. MORE

Nearly 300 'mermaids' lined Lake Michigan for Mermaid Megafest

Michigan is home to many mermaids, it appears. Nearly 300 people donned fins for Mermaid Megafest this weekend on the shores of Lake Michigan. While mermaids (unfortunately) aren't real, this setting certainly felt magical for fin-wearers and spectators alike. The festival wasn't just fun and games, though, as there was a focus on environmental issues. After all, mermaids want to swim in clean water. MORE
