Savanah DeHart's mother took her to a Kalamazoo-area hospital on Aug. 16. She'd been having severe headaches and was lethargic. By Aug. 22, doctors didn't think the 14-year-old Vicksburg High School freshman was going survive. A few days later, she was diagnosed with Eastern equine encephalitis. DeHart is "beating the odds," but her road to recovery is long. She still cannot talk or walk. "I just want her to say, 'Hi, Mom; hi, Dad," and hug us," said her mother.
