'You don't deserve to breathe,' mother of dismembered woman says to killer

Jared Chance allegedly once boasted he could kill somebody and get away with it. He didn't get away with the murder of Ashley Young. A jury last month found him guilty on multiple counts, including second-degree murder. On Thursday, he only stared at the floor as the mother of the woman he killed addressed him at his sentencing. Kristine Young faced down her daughter's killer and had nothing but contempt for him: "I want to rip you limb from limb and discard you like trash, like what you did to Ashley. You do not deserve to breathe." MORE

Michigan teen fighting deadly EEE virus 'beating the odds'
hat
Savanah DeHart's mother took her to a Kalamazoo-area hospital on Aug. 16. She'd been having severe headaches and was lethargic. By Aug. 22, doctors didn't think the 14-year-old Vicksburg High School freshman was going survive. A few days later, she was diagnosed with Eastern equine encephalitis. DeHart is "beating the odds," but her road to recovery is long. She still cannot talk or walk. "I just want her to say, 'Hi, Mom; hi, Dad," and hug us," said her mother.

The city of Muskegon has pulled out all the stops this week for a "dignitary" from Milwaukee that washed up on a Lake Michigan beach. Meet "Darrel the Barrel." The orange and white traffic drum floated across the lake and now is the toast of Skeetown. Darrel has been given quite the tour of the Port City the past couple days, posing for photos at a number of area landmarks. Our suggestion to Mr. Barrel: Next time, just take the ferryMORE

B1G pics: MSU's turn with a curious line
hat
It is fun trying to predict the outcome of sporting events. No, really, it is. There's nothing quite like getting that weekly reminder that predicting outcomes is a fool's errand. Entering this week's pics, we're sporting an overall record of 26-28-2. That's just slightly worst than a 50-50 coin flip. That's cool, though. Eating crow for dinner once a week with a slice of humble pie for dessert doesn't kill us. It just makes us stronger! MORE
