Michigan State names Samuel Stanley as new president after Larry Nassar scandal
 
Effective Aug. 1, Michigan State University will have its first full-fledged president since Lou Anna Simon stepped down in January 2018 amid the Larry Nassar scandal. Samuel Stanley Jr., a biomedical researcher who currently serves as Stony Brook University president, said he is ready to help the MSU community heal from the aftermath of Nassar's convictions for sexually assaulting hundreds of patients and students athletes. Stanley, who the board unanimously voted to hire, pledged to create a plan for diversity, inclusion and equity at the university. MORE

Michigan House bill would ban abortions after fetal heartbeat detected
 
A bill recently introduced in the Michigan House would make it illegal for an abortion to take place after a fetal heartbeat is detected. If passed, any doctor performing an abortion after that point could face prison time for performing an abortion. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has vowed to fight anti-abortion efforts in Michigan. That also includes a ballot petition drive that was recently started by a group called Michigan Heartbeat Coalition. MORE

Mom fighting 'til my last breath' to keep daughter's killer locked up
 
Edith Siordia's 7-year-old daughter, Sonya, disappeared in 1967. Soon thereafter, Siordia found herself burying her young daughter. The man who killed Sonya is now asking to be released from the psychiatric hospital where he is housed.
