A great weekend for Michigan's Big Ten

Both Michigan and Michigan State football came out victorious on Saturday.

The fifth-ranked Wolverines rushed for a season-high 418 yards against the nation’s No. 5 rushing defense, beating No. 10 Penn State in lopsided fashion, 41-17. "Twitter fingers" sparked halftime jawing between the teams.

Payton Thorne threw a 27-yard touchdown to Jayden Reed in double overtime to lift the Spartans to a 34-28 win against Wisconsin. Their longest losing streak in three years is finally over.

Amazon, Walmart, Target launch pre-Black Friday deals. Michigan retailers aren’t there yet.

Big chain deals: In a reverse of last year’s “buy now or miss out” messaging, major retailers, like Amazon, Walmart and Target, are offloading excess inventory this year with discounts starting in October.

Different tactics: According to the latest Michigan Retailers Association survey, for this holiday season, 60% of Michigan retailers reported they’ll start running holiday promotions at the same time as 2021. However, 22% reported they won’t be running holiday promotions at all this year because of the current cost pressures they are facing.

Speaking of stores:Kroger announced plans to purchase its competitor, Albertsons, as part of a $24.6 billion deal, creating one the largest grocery chains in the U.S. with a total of nearly 5,000 stores.

For the first time in 3 months, no Michigan county has high COVID levels

No orange for Michigan: None of Michigan’s 83 counties had high coronavirus transmission levels in the latest assessment from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Another decrease: Daily reported COVID cases dropped another 2.6% last week, bringing the seven-day average to a six-month low.

The latest in vaccines:The newest medical innovation to fight COVID-19 is here, but people are hardly racing to get it this time around. 3% of Michiganders have gotten the omicron booster shot – see the uptake by each county here.

Colorado fishermen cited for poaching 460 pounds of salmon in Northern Michigan

State conservation officers cited a group of Colorado fishermen for illegally taking more than 460 pounds of salmon in Northern Michigan, then donated the fish to local families.

What happened? The officers found the fisherman did not have valid fishing licenses, were using illegal tackle and had 17 salmon taken by illegal methods. Once that was discovered, the fishermen admitted to taking other fish. Officers found 40-50 more salmon at their vehicles. Some of the fish had already been filleted.

What would Prop 3 do: A guide to Michigan’s abortion rights ballot proposal

Background:Michigan’s abortion ban from 1931 was struck down in September by a state judge, but voters have a chance this fall to permanently etch abortion rights into the state constitution.

How it got to the ballot: Michigan’s state elections board deadlocked, 2-2, along partisan lines to temporarily keep the measure from voters. But the state Supreme Court disregarded an argument about a word spacing error, and Prop 3 was approved for the ballot.

The contents: Proposal 3 would guarantee “a fundamental right to reproductive freedom” that includes abortion, contraception, infertility care and more, according to the full language that would go in as a constitutional amendment.

The grand opening: The world’s longest timber-towered suspension bridge is ready for you to cross. SkyBridge Michigan, located at the Boyne Mountain Resort, is 1,200 feet long, 120 feet off the ground, and features a 36-foot span of see-through glass flooring in the middle of the bridge.
