See which Michigan counties have the highest COVID-19 vaccination rates so far The state of Michigan has a 70% COVID-19 vaccination rate goal. One Michigan county has locally achieved that goal. But with the state as a whole at 55% of the population 16 and up vaccinated so far, as of Monday, some areas are clearly ahead of others. Right now, eight counties have 60% or more of eligible residents at least partially vaccinated against COVID-19. We have a deep dive into data here, looking first at the counties that are ahead of the curve with vaccinations. We also take a look into positivity rates around the state and testing. In the summer, you always hear Michiganders saying something like, "I'm headed up to the lake this weekend." And everyone has their own definition of which lake is "the lake." Well, we have an idea now of when it will get here, thanks to MLive Chief Meteorologist Mark Torregrossa. But you won't walk outside today and immediately feel a warm glow. This warmup will be a bit slow, happening over the course of the next week. By next Wednesday, we should be into the low 70s. Your jackets may just a get a break yet. MORE When Houston Astros pitcher Justin Verlander scheduled a conference call on Friday to talk to reporters about his rehabilitation progress, there was briefly a flurry of speculation on social media that the former Tiger would be announcing his retirement. Nothing could be further from the truth. “I’m playing until the wheels fall off,” he told Houston reporters on the call. Verlander underwent Tommy John surgery last October after pitching in just one game in 2020. Verlander is a free agent after the 2021 season and it will be interesting to see how the market receives him. MORE Michigan residents donated hundreds of toys, clothes and other items to unaccompanied migrant children being housed in the state under a federal program. A donation drive organized by state Rep. Mari Manoogian, D-Birmingham, and Fems for Democracy, a nonprofit political advocacy group, resulted in an outpouring of generosity from residents across the state. Volunteers said they’re trying to make life a little more comfortable for children who traveled thousands of miles without their parents. “Carloads upon carloads” of donated items quickly poured in when the call went out.
