December 20, 2021 People are staying longer at Michigan hospitals during the latest rush of COVID-19 patients. “We’ve seen overall our length of stay increased slightly because of the large number of COVID patients we are having,” Dr. Christine Nefcy, chief medical officer for Munson Healthcare based in Traverse City, said last week. The average, roughly, is five to seven days, she said, though this number varies. For some, such as those requiring intubation, their stays could be prolonged. A list of people remaining more than 10 days is much longer than it used to be at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, Chief Nursing Officer Amy Brown said. It is not uncommon for some COVID-19 patients to be at the hospital for 10, 14 or 18 days.
