While recreational marijuana is legal in Michigan, plenty of municipalities have banned marijuana businesses from opening within their borders. That includes Michigan's largest city, Detroit, where police are now saying black-market marijuana is to blame for a spike in violent crime. So far this year, Detroit has experienced 17 fatal shootings and 32 non-fatal shootings. The majority of those, according to Detroit Police Chief James Craig, involve black-market marijuana deals. The people at Progress Michigan think lobbyists have too much influence on Michigan politics. In an attempt to change that, the group is backing a ballot initiative that would put into place some new rules and restrictions for lobbyists. For instance, it would ban lobbyists from giving gifts to elected officials. Wolverine Worldwide is a footwear manufacturer known for brands like Hush Puppies and Merrell. Here in Michigan, it's also known as the company responsible for widespread PFAS contamination in northern Kent County. Hundreds of residents in the Rockford area are involved in a lawsuit against Wolverine. Meanwhile, last week, the Rockford Chamber of Commerce named the shoe manufacturer "business of the year."
