Legal marijuana already has some Michigan communities opting out
Michigan voters last week made our state the 10th in the U.S. to allow recreational marijuana for adults. However, while the new law takes effect in December, some communities across the state already are taking steps to ban marijuana businesses. This proactive move allows these individual communities to regulate pot while the state hammers out the details of the new pot law. In fact, some city councils were putting ordinances in place even before voters went to the polls. The state has a year from the time the law goes into effect to develop rules before it is required to start issuing business licenses. MORE

Senator holds field hearing on PFAS in Michigan

Sen. Gary Peters, D-Mich, convened a two-hour hearing Tuesday in Grand Rapids about the state of PFAS contamination in Michigan. Peters heard from two panels of witnesses, including Robert Delaney, a geologist with the Michigan DEQ who in 2010 discovered PFAS contamination at the former Wurtsmith Air Force base in Oscoda. Delaney testified he felt like "Chicken Little" when he wrote his report in 2012 about the potential public health crisis PFAS posed. There is little evidence to show the state acted on that report until recently. MORE

Why the 'White Hurricane' was the Great Lakes' worst disaster in history

Perhaps you've never heard of it, but the epic storm that hit the Great Lakes in 1913 was likely the largest natural disaster that has ever terrorized the region. From Lake Superior to Lake Erie, what was dubbed the "White Hurricane" combined blizzard conditions with hurricane-force winds. Over the course of five days, more than 250 sailors were lost to the devastating storm. This is certainly a terrifying piece of Michigan history. MORE
