In today's newsletter, Biden returns to Michigan, a look at today's storm forecast and Michigan state parks are undergoing construction. |
Despite spring-like weather hitting Michigan for the past several weeks, we won't officially transition into the new season until March 19. If the promise of spring has you feeling outdoorsy, keep your eyes open for migratory birds making their way back up north to Michigan. Here's a short guide to five birds you might see this time of year. Speaking of Michigan wildlife, don't be alarmed if you hear clucking in the woods that sounds like a chicken or duck. It's likely a wood frog, a native Michigan amphibian, making its way to a nearby woodland pond, wetland or vernal pool for mating season. |

Biden heads back to Michigan as he looks to shore up ‘Blue Wall’ |
Campaign trail: President Joe Biden is returning to Michigan today as a part of his campaign efforts. He and his campaign team will visit Saginaw County, a place experts say is critical to his reelection. It was once reliably Democratic, but swung to Trump in 2016 and only narrowly backed Biden four years ago. Anti-drug: Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed a pair of bills Tuesday that ban the sale of objects that can be used for the recreational use of nitrous oxide and increase penalties for those who sell to minors. The laws hope to curb the use of nitrous oxide as a mind-altering drug. "Dark money": A group of Democratic state lawmakers are proposing bills that would broaden the reporting requirement for elected officials and the accounts they use to raise money out of public view. |

Construction ahead: Make sure your Michigan state park will be open before you visit |
Revitalized: Many state parks, trails and outdoor spaces across the state are undergoing construction in 2024 thanks to a $250 million investment through the American Rescue Plan Act, or ARPA. This work could cause potential disruptions to overnight and day-trip plans at some state park locations, but DNR officials said it’s a worthwhile tradeoff, as the funds are helping address a decades-long backlog of repair and maintenance needs. Upgrades: One of the parks receiving a facelift is the Brighton Recreation Area. The nearly 5,000-acre state natural area in Livingston County is in line for millions in infrastructure upgrades and will have prolonged closures this summer. Accepting applications: Michigan’s most remote national park is hiring two ranger-interpreters to join its team for the season, officials announced. Isle Royale, a remote island wilderness in Lake Superior, is among the national parks that see the fewest visitors. |

Next storm system: Timeline on thunderstorms, rain and is there any snow? |
Pending storms: A storm system will bring somewhat spring-like rains through Michigan Thursday. The Storm Prediction Center puts the area from I-94 southward into a small chance of isolated tornadoes, isolated hail and isolated brief, strong wind gusts. Risk area: The severe weather risk is in the southern third of Lower Michigan from Grand Rapids to Lansing to Oakland County and all areas southward into Ohio and Indiana. Detroit, Ann Arbor, Jackson and Kalamazoo are all in the potential severe thunderstorm area. Up north: According to the National Weather Service, Wednesday's record highs will collapse into the 30s for many locations in a span of 24 hours with the first cold front on Thursday. This sets up for a cool pattern lasting into the weekend in which lake-effect snow will be possible in the U.P. |

Michigan basketball loses Big Ten Tournament opener, ending dismal season |
On the court: One of the worst seasons in Michigan men’s basketball history is officially over. The Wolverines fell to Penn State 66-57 during the Big Ten season opener in Minneapolis. This was the Wolverines’ ninth straight loss, closing the season 2-19. In baseball: As the Detroit Tigers push through spring training, their roster continues to shrink. After making six cuts last week, the Tigers trimmed 10 more players on Tuesday, bringing the roster to 44 players. The Tigers need to get down to 26 for Opening Day at the Chicago White Sox on March 28. In remembrance:Saginaw native Larry Benjamin, who went viral for dying his hair Honolulu blue during the historic Detroit Lions playoff run, died on Sunday, March 10. |
