LGBTQ community celebrates love with events in Detroit, Kalamazoo
Pride was on display this weekend on the streets of Detroit and Kalamazoo. The Motor City Pride parade Sunday marched through the streets of Downtown Detroit with rainbow flags and plenty of colors on display to liven up an otherwise gray and cloudy day. The event was part of an annual two-day festival, which typically attracts 40,000 people for the largest annual LGBTQ gathering in the state. Not to be outdone, the Kalamazoo Pride festival took to downtown Kalamazoo for its own two-day event over the weekend. In its 11th year, the festival is the largest fundraiser for OutFront Kalamazoo. Funding boost included in state education budget

Michigan school districts will be getting more money per pupil, while state universities and community colleges will see modest funding increases after lawmakers reached agreement on the state education budget. Much of the K-12 increase is targeted toward at-risk students -- young children showing developmental delays and those attending lower-funded districts. Lawmakers also took steps to bolster sexual assault reporting at public universities in light of the Larry Nassar sex-abuse scandal at Michigan State. Universities that don't abide by the rules risk losing state funding. MORE

A win is a win as veteran Boyer celebrates rain-shortened MIS victory

You gotta love the way Clint Bowyer appreciates a hard-fought victory. You could almost say he brings an enthusiasm unknown to victory lane. Fitting, that, since he drove to his first victory in Michigan during Sunday's rain-shortened FireKeepers Casino 400 at Michigan International Speedway. The race was called official with 133 laps complete of the 200 scheduled on the two-mile oval after the skies opened up once again during a wet racing weekend. Saturday's Xfinity Series race also was called early due to rain. MORE

Why swimming in a Great Lake is like being in a giant washing machine

We absolutely adore our Great Lakes. What's not to love about them? From the postcard perfect sunrises on Lake Huron to the awe-inspiring sunsets on Lake Michigan to the awesome power of Lake Superior, we got it pretty good. The National Weather Service reminds us, though, that all that beauty and opportunity to frolic does not come without warning. Swimming in the Great Lakes can be downright dangerous, what with the frequency of waves and the threat of rip currents. So, as we enter swimming season, enjoy the lakes but stay safe out there!
