Why the 'White Hurricane' was the worst natural disaster ever to hit the Great Lakes

Just over 100 years ago, Michigan was pummeled by what is considered the worst natural disaster ever to befall the Great Lakes region. The Great Storm of 1913 packed wind gusts up to 100 mph. This weekend marks the 106th anniversary of the "White Hurricane." At least 12 ships sank during the tempest while plying the treacherous Great Lakes waters lead to the doom of more than 250 sailors.
