‘We’re 100% full’: RSV surge filling C.S. Mott hospital beds, similar to COVID-19 |
A surge in cases: Respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV, is not COVID-19 in terms of viral severity, health officials say. But the pediatric illness is straining Michigan Medicine operations much like COVID-19 did.
Similar trends: Hospital beds at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital in Ann Arbor are 100% full due to a surge in RSV cases, said Luanne Thomas Ewald, C.S. Mott and Von Voigtlander Women’s Hospital COO. Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids is also seeing child inpatient numbers and child emergency department visits significantly increased due to RSV. Be aware: C.S. Mott has seen 259 RSV cases this fall, a 46% increase from last year, Michigan Medicine officials said. Earlier this month, a 6-year-old from Macomb County died from RSV at Corewell Health Beaumont Troy Hospital. Here are the 6 most common RSV symptoms to watch for. |

Reflecting: More than 4.4 million Michiganders cast ballots in the Nov. 8 midterm election, and with those votes came several historic first – though, not all necessarily positive.
Examples: From record voter turnout to a change of hands with regard to party control of the legislature, Michiganders turned out in droves to buck what otherwise was anticipated to be a “Red Wave” in favor of Republicans.
Blaming Dixon: Even though the dust is still settling, the Republican Party itself is undergoing internal strife as members seek to answer why that wave failed to reach shore. |

81 of 83 Michigan counties favor abortion rights more today vs. 1972 |
Background: Two months before Roe v. Wade legalized abortion in 1973, Michigan voted against a proposal that would legalize it in Michigan in the first 20 weeks. Five months after Roe v. Wade was struck down this summer, Michigan voters had another shot at legalizing abortion. The results were much different.
See voting results: Here’s a look at the county-by-county trends – which voted in favor, how the numbers compare to 1972 and how abortion rights outperformed Gov. Gretchen Whitmer in 82 of 83 counties.
Certification process in motion: Now that the dust has settled on Tuesday’s general election, the work turns to election clerks to confirm the results of the election.
