'We've failed low-wage workers:' Restaurant owners raise pay in wake of labor shortage Restaurant owners have been pleading for workers amid a widespread labor shortage, but laborers are firing back, saying a return to work under the status quo just won’t do. A cultural shift in the industry could help with recruiting, but it needs to start with more respect for the profession from the top down, and that includes better wages and benefits, said Matt Millar, chef and co-owner of The Southerner in Saugatuck. “There are jobs that need to be done and not all of them are glamorous, but they are all worthy of a living wage,” he said. “I think we have to resign ourselves to the idea that we’ve failed low-wage workers for a long time. The new mandate allows all fully vaccinated people – which means they’re two weeks removed from their final shot – to ditch their masks in most outdoor and indoor spaces. Businesses must make a “good faith effort” to make sure unvaccinated people wear masks. To count as a “good faith effort,” a business can do any of three options: Put up signs to say unvaccinated people must still wear masks, ask customers if they are vaccinated or simply require everybody to wear masks. He started as a temporary worker cutting grass, but got promoted to his current position a few months in. Now, Truss scouts new lots while driving around the city on the job, noting eyesores he can help fix up. He’s taken a weed trimmer and lawnmower to the city’s vacant lots in his spare time for almost nine years, he said. It's something he enjoys doing for the sake of beautifying his city.
