As Biden departs Saginaw, councilman calls it ‘a day I’ll never forget’ |
Quick trip: President Joe Biden met with campaign supporters and Michigan politicians for a five-hour visit in Saginaw on Thursday. Officials described the trip as an effort to empower a “grassroots army” of volunteers to help Biden clinch a second term in the White House. Stopping by: Biden’s trip included a visit to a 131-year-old Victorian mansion owned by Saginaw Councilman Bill Ostash and school board leader Kevin Rooker. They were joined by Saginaw Mayor Brenda Moore and U.S. Rep. Dan Kildee (D-Flint Township). The councilman said the visit was "a day I’ll never forget." "This isn't the place for you": Some experts say college-educated residents' dissatisfaction with the Ottawa County board—which came out in a MLive-commissioned public opinion poll—could impact talent attraction and retention in county. |

Strong cold front ends our spring weather for a while |
Bye-bye warmth: Michigan's warmer than normal temperatures are coming to an end. A strong cold front is going to move straight south across Lower Michigan Saturday, dramatically changing the temperatures. By Sunday afternoon it will feel like winter once again. Saving money: It’s been the warmest winter on record for parts of Michigan, which means the state has saved money on clearing roads from snow and ice. The state expects to use 175,000 less tons of deicing salt this winter than they typically would, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation. Reduced road salt use comes with a savings of about $10 million, the state estimated. Also in the Midwest: Chunks of hail as big as softballs pelted Kansas and Missouri during a storm Wednesday night, The Associated Press reports. Some are calling it “gorilla hail,” a term coined by Grand Rapids storm chaser Reed Timmer, according to AP reporter Jim Salter. |

Juwan Howard, Michigan athletic director address Howard’s job security |
What's next: After Michigan finished the basketball season 8-24 on Wednesday, setting a record for most losses in program history, Juwon Howard's head coaching position might be in jeopardy. Because of that record, how lopsided many of the losses were, and the general direction of the program over the last few years, it’s no guarantee Howard will return for a sixth season. High school basketball:Wyoming Tri-unity Christian withstood everything during Thursday’s Division 4 state semifinal against St. Ignace, from strong 3-point shooting by the Saints early to a second-half technical foul, and St. Ignace putting together a 9-0 run and a 7-0 run. New job: Jon Sanderson has left Michigan, but he’s staying in the Big Ten. The former strength and conditioning coach for the Michigan men’s basketball program has been hired by Illinois, the school announced on Thursday night. |
