Michigan K-12 budget heads to governor without Senate Democrats' support
 
It is one down and several more to go. Sort of. With a deadline looming, the Michigan House and Senate passed an education budget Thursday, sending it to Governor Gretchen Whitmer's desk for approval. However, while the deal passed by a wide majority in the House, it eked out of the Senate without any support from Democrats. The school aid budget is one of several budgets official must agree upon before the fiscal year begins Oct. 1. The governor stopped negotiating with Republican leaders on the budget last week over road funding. MORE

Child's giant pumpkin grows in late grandmother's tree
 
This story comes straight out of our Good News file. An 8-year-old from Saginaw planted some pumpkin seeds this year. He placed a mixture of seeds he got from school and ones left by his late grandmother along a fence near a tree his grandmother planted 10 years ago. Well, those pumpkin seeds grew into pumpkin plants. Those pumpkin plants sent out pumpkin vines. Before long, a pumpkin started growing in grandma's tree. MORE

Hearse Fest moves from Hell to Fowlerville
 
The 19th annual Hearse Fest is back this weekend. And it is what its name presumes: A festival featuring lots of hearses. This year's iteration, though, features a new venue. The festival outgrew its roots in Hell and had to move about 20 miles north to Fowlerville. MORE
