Michigan governor election to be showdown between Whitmer, Schuette
And then there were two. The race for Michigan governor is down to Republican Bill Schuette and Democrat Gretchen Whitmer, after the pair won their respective primaries Tuesday. Both candidates entered the election as prohibitive favorite. Each delivered sound victories. Schuette garnered about 50 percent of the R vote, doubling up on his nearest challenger, Brian Calley. Whitmer also tallied about 50 percent of the D vote, holding off a late, Bernie Sanders-fueled charge by Abdul El-Sayed. And now the real fun begins as we barrel toward the Nov. 6 general election. MORE

America's Got Talent winner entertains crowd at Jackson County Fair

O.K. Here's your break from politics, as we all collect our breath before things ramp up for the Nov. 6 general election. We defy you to come up with something more cotton-candy sweet than an uber-talented 13-year-old ventriloquist who sings like an angel. (Don't even try. It isn't possible. Though, the twins marriage story is pretty cute.) Admittedly, some of us had never heard of the 2017 America's Got Talent winner before she graced the Jackson County Fair stage. We suggest you watch the highlight video of her performance. Bravo, kiddo. (Oh, and the fair runs through Saturday.) MORE

Lions smack pads with Raiders during joint practice in Napa, Calif.

The Detroit Lions are in California this week, ahead of their Friday preseason opener against the Oakland Raiders. The two teams got a feel for each other Tuesday in the first of two joint practices. (The other one is today.) MLive Lions beat reporter Kyle Meinke is in Napa, Calif., to observe and report. His takeaways from Tuesday are a bit of a mixed bag. Marvin Jones continues to impress and the secondary looks strong. However, facing a live opponent shows just how much work is left to be done on both lines. MORE
