From farm field to supermarket
In today's newsletter, a giant DuPont leftover in Michigan has defied cleanup for decades, new road construction begins this week, and Mackinac Island’s Secret Garden is gorgeous this year - if you can find it. |
What does the weather look like this week? |
The hot weather of last week will back off some this week. This new temperature pattern will still come with some very skimpy chances of rain. Eventually late in the week we will have a moderate move toward a pattern with occasional thunderstorms. Hazy skies will hang on over Michigan for at least another day or so after Canadian wildfires ramped up this past weekend, sending the drifting smoke over both of our peninsulas. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources said dry conditions continue to pose a significant risk for wildfires. Crews have responded to 193 fires so far in 2023. |

From farm field to supermarket: see how Michigan’s first spring crop is harvested |
Painting the scene: Snapped, not cut, and a painstaking day in the field equals a flavorful, crisp product for consumers. On a hot spring day, Asparagus grows rapidly in the rich soil of Oceana County. A group of farmhands get onto a horizontal picking cart and fire up a small motor that propels them through the fields along Lake Michigan. They snap off the best eight inch green and purple stalks in sight. This continues for 8 to 10 hours depending on the weather. Watch the entire process here. Asparagus royalty: Did you know Michigan ranks first in the nation for asparagus production? Here's 5 facts about Michigan’s ‘Asparagus Capital of the World.' |

A giant DuPont leftover in Michigan has defied cleanup for decades |
From above, it almost looks like a glacier: In reality, the big white hill north of White Lake is a made of lime. It’s a leftover from DuPont, which made neoprene rubber, acetylene and Freon at a site near Montague that’s kitty corner to the infamous Hooker Chemical “Temple of Doom.” Want it removed: The factory is gone, but its byproducts remain to the frustration of local advocates who are fed up with the leisurely pace of a decades-long cleanup. More in environmental: Michigan residents shouldn’t be concerned about strange looking trees they’ve likely spotted in certain parts of the state. Those are red pines. And their tops are cut like that on purpose. |

New road construction begins this week |
Look out: More orange construction barrels are going up throughout the state as crews work to repair roads and bridges. Here's an interactive map with a handful of projects to be aware of that may slow your commute or require detours from your normal routine. Suspending some trains: Michiganders will have one less weekday option to travel to and from Chicago for a period this summer as Amtrak prepares to begin construction along one of its routes. More in public interest: New renderings give the most detailed look yet at the Grand Rapids amphitheater. |

Mackinac Island’s Secret Garden is gorgeous this year - if you can find it |
The Secret Garden area outside Mackinac Island’s famous Grand Hotel has been Instagram-worthy for years. With its vibrant colors and a design that changes each summer, it has become one of the must-see spots for visitors. Here's the "secret" part. Also on Mackinac: Some of the island’s lilac bushes are just starting to show some color, which means they should be in fragrant bloom in the next week or two - perfect timing to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Mackinac’s Lilac Festival. Off the island : Shipwreck tours have returned for the season to Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary in Alpena, where visitors can take a scenic cruise within 4,300 miles of federally protected waters for a unique peek into Great Lakes maritime history. |
