In today's newsletter, ranking Michigan's road conditions, why Michigan had to kill 31,000 Atlantic Salmon and try glamping in these domes. |
Have you seen a peacock flying around? |
It's pretty common to see bluejays or cardinals nesting throughout Michigan. Some birdwatchers might even be searching for the rare Kirtland’s warbler this season. But residents of Saginaw Township are hoping to see something unique the next time they peer through their binoculars. Saginaw County Animal Care and Control Center officers are still on the hunt for an elusive peacock as of Tuesday afternoon and are asking the public to help locate it. A student spotted the bird on Monday, June 3, on his drive to Valley Lutheran High School, but it got away before he could capture it. Passersby who spot the loose bird can call the animal control center at 989-797-4500. |

See how your area Michigan road conditions rate from 1 to 10 |
Fix the roads: About one in four primary roads and highways in Michigan are in good condition. Of the remaining federal-aid roads, 41% are in fair condition and 33% are in poor condition, according to the latest assessment by the Transportation Asset Management Council. Use this map to see how roads are ranked in your area. Wrongly tolled: A Bay City commissioner wants a legal team to review whether the subsidiary leasing two of its bridges breached a city contract by tolling low-income families. On the road: A woman who caused a fatal crash has been charged in Macomb County. Courtney Ellise Niezgoda was driving her Ford EcoSport on M-53 when she ran a red light, hitting another vehicle and killing 63-year-old Tina Yaney of Macomb. |

Why Michigan DNR was forced to kill 31,000 Atlantic salmon |
More than 31,000 Atlantic salmon were euthanized at a Michigan fish hatchery after they tested positive for bacterial kidney disease. Also known as BKD, it is known to kill trout and salmon and is believed to be largely responsible for the decline in Great Lakes Chinook salmon populations in the mid-1980s. A prescribed 28-day antibiotic treatment was completed May 17, but was not fully effective, Michigan's Department of Natural Resources said. Great outdoors: Michigan's annual "Three Free" kicks off this weekend, meaning state licensing requirements will be waved for fishing and off-road vehicles from Saturday, June 8 to Sunday, June 9. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources also won’t require a Recreation Passport or daily pass for entry into state parks, recreation areas, boating access sites, trails and more. |

Spring was among Top 10 warmest for some southwest, southcentral Michigan cities |
Warmer than usual: It was a very warm spring for the southwest corner and the south-central part of Lower Michigan. All of the major climate stations had a top-10 warmest spring. All cities were at least four degrees warmer than average and almost eight degrees warmer in Gaylord. The city also had over one foot of precipitation, putting it five inches above normal and the wettest spring on record. Severe weather: Wednesday late morning through early evening is the timeframe for everything from scattered storms to damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph. There might be the chance for some small hail, too, depending on where you live, according to the National Weather Service forecast. Heating up: The summer forecast calls for overall warmer than normal conditions. There is a weather pattern change emerging that would bring that hot weather our way into Michigan and the Great Lakes region. |

101 workers face termination as Michigan bathtub factory permanently closes |
Workforce: A fiberglass bathtub manufacturer in St. Joseph County is preparing to let go of about 100 employees as part of a permanent plant closure, the company has announced. The employees will be terminated over a two-week period beginning July 14. None of the employees are represented by a union, the company said in a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act letter to the state. In business: Tommy’s Boats, a Grand Rapids-based boat dealer that operates more than a dozen stores in eight states and has described itself as one of the largest pontoon dealers in North America, has filed for bankruptcy. More layoffs: Automated equipment supplier MHS Conveyor Corp. plans to lay off 102 workers as part of its plan to close manufacturing operations at factories it operates in Walker and Norton Shores. |

Glamping in a ‘disco dome’? Geodesic dome resort to open near Lake Michigan |
Unique stay: Billed as something out of a pulp sci-fi magazine, “disco domes” are opening near Lake Michigan this summer. At the former home of the South Haven Country Club, DayDreamer Domes offers tech-enabled, four-season, brass-colored geodesic domes across the 150-acre property. The property also has a pink heated pool, reimagined clubhouse with sensory tanks and "secret doors like something out of Alice in Wonderland.” For a cause: Get ready for rides, fishing and fair food at the annual Carp Carnival. The 65th-annual carnival, hosted by the Michigan Center Lions and Lioness clubs, is Thursday, June 6, through Sunday, June 9, at Leoni Township Park on Fifth Street in Michigan Center. Live music: Weekly free music is back at the Grand River this summer in downtown Grand Haven. The concert series, Music on the Grand, will kick off Wednesday, June 5. Free music will continue every Wednesday through Aug. 28. |
