July 30, 2020 Since COVID-19 landed in Michigan more than four months ago, it has been the main topic of conversation for many residents. With all of that discussion between family, friends and neighbors, there have been some myths spread, along with some good, solid information on the virus and its transmission. It can seem like a daunting task to separate fact from fiction with every soundbite on COVID-19. We tried to make it a little easier by compiling some very common myths and truths about the coronavirus. We start with one that has popped up a lot recently -- the myth that masks are bad for your health. MORE The federal government is sending additional law enforcement to Detroit. But federal officials who held a press conference Wednesday said the agents will be targeting gun violence, not protesters. The plan is an expansion of Operation Legend, which will send 42 federal agents from the FBI, DEA, Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and U.S. Marshals to Detroit to fight gun and gang violence. The additional law enforcement resources are being provided as Detroit reports an increase in violent crime. MORE The Michigan Supreme Court has ruled that former Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder will have to face a lawsuit regarding the Flint water crisis. The same goes for state government agencies and former emergency managers appointed by Snyder, who are also listed as defendants in the lawsuit. Originally filed in 2016, the lawsuit claims the defendants violated Flint residents’ “bodily integrity” by exposing them to lead-contaminated water and hiding what they knew about it. MORE The Michigan High School Athletic Association has ruled that regular practice for all sports can begin in August, as originally scheduled. For those who are curious about regular games this season, some can proceed as normal and some are on hold until a decision is made at a later date. The sports that can proceed with regular games are considered low risk, like golf and tennis. An answer about football and other high-contact sports will come on Aug. 20.
