In today's newsletter, Detroit population rises after decades of decline, health care jobs with the best growth and a Lake Michigan beach will get a lifesaving robot. |
A holiday weekend is approaching |
I know it's only Monday, but can we fast-forward through this week and get to the weekend already? Apparently not, which is unfortunate because we do have some storms that are expected to move through Michigan early this week. Some could be severe. Do you plan on traveling this Memorial Day weekend? Here are the best and worst times to travel as Michigan is expected to have more than 1.15 million residents hitting the road. A big shout-out to the uniformed firefighters, first responders and other runners who participated in the Tunnel to Towers 5K to raise money for injured first responders, military heroes and their families on May 18 at Jackson’s Cascade Falls Park. |

Should Michigan State Police trooper be charged in Samuel Sterling’s death? Experts weigh in. |
As Michigan’s attorney general mulls over a decision whether to criminally charge a Michigan State Police trooper for Samuel Sterling’s death, legal experts have varying opinions on what the outcome may be. One professor, Shelly Taylor Page, said a vehicular manslaughter charge would fit the alleged crime, while another professor, Lewis Langham, said he wouldn’t be surprised if the AG didn’t file any charges. A third professor, William Ortman, said unless the investigation uncovered a fact not apparent from the video, it would not be surprising to see charges filed here. More in crime: Six men working as part of a criminal organization in Michigan have been arrested in connection with the theft of more than 400 vehicles worth about $8 million, authorities said Thursday. |

Census Bureau estimates: Detroit population rises after decades of decline |
America’s Northeast and Midwest cities are rebounding slightly from years of population drops — especially Detroit, which grew for the first time in decades — though the South still dominates the nation’s growth, according to U.S. Census Bureau estimates released Thursday. While we're in the city: “Dinosauria” returns to the Detroit Zoo from Saturday, May 25 through Sunday, September 8. Visitors will see more than 25 dinosaurs on the premises, including a Brachiosaurus and a T. Rex. Scary good: You never know who or what you’ll see when cosplayers gather at Michigan’s biggest comic con. Motor City Comic Con took place all weekend at the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi. Here are a few of the best dressed people in costumes we came across. |

Health care jobs with best growth, wage trends for the next 10 years in Michigan |
The data says: Home health and personal care aides are projected to face a shortage of more than 170,000 jobs over the next decade. It’s the largest expected shortage in the industry according to an analysis published Thursday, May 16, by the Michigan Health Council. Nursing assistants are on the “unhealthiest” job growth trend thanks to some of the worst position shortages and turnover numbers, according to the 2024 Michigan Healthcare Workforce Index. Other low-ranking jobs include dental assistants and hygienists, clinical lab technologists and technicians, and psychologists. Rare deadly brain disease ravages woman’s family: Jen Nimsick noticed her mother had a slight tremor and issues walking, but she knew what it meant. Over the next nine months, Nimsick watched as a rare genetic prion disease chipped away at her mother. It’s the same aggressive disease that took the lives of Nimsick’s grandmother, uncle and a cousin. And one day, symptoms will likely trigger for her brother. Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease has cast a shadow over Nimsick’s family for generations. |

Did mound grooming spark tension between Tigers, D’backs Saturday night? |
What happened: When the Detroit Tigers rallied for six runs in the seventh inning to overtake the Arizona Diamondbacks on Saturday night, players in the Tigers’ dugout were understandably elated. But TV cameras also caught some surprising images in the background: A yelling match between Tigers starting pitcher Jack Flaherty and Arizona manager Torey Lovullo in the opposing dugout. The possible spark of the conflict was a back-and-forth battle that occurred between nearly every inning: Flaherty would use his cleats to groom the mound to his standards during his half-inning. At the break, D’backs starter Zac Gallen would summon the grounds crew to repair the mound to his preferences. Gallen told reporters after the game that his hamstring had tightened up and he was therefore more sensitive to mound grooming. |

Lake Michigan beach to get lifesaving, high-tech robot |
Deploying from the water’s edge: E.M.I.L.Y. (Emergency Integrated Lifesaving Lanyard) is a remote-controlled water device that can be sent out to help save people in the water. The device is coming to the shores of Lake Michigan after a donation to Berrien County. Also on the lake: Passengers, vehicles, and even a semi-truck and trailer were loaded onto the S.S. Badger car ferry in Ludington on Friday, May 17, 2024, for the first time since July. The 2023 season was cut short by a mechanical failure related to the ramp lift system. The lift system was completely rebuilt, with painting finishing up on Thursday. The tours at a historic Upper Peninsula copper mine site now have an unexpected new highlight. During a project at Painesdale Mine & Shaft, workers recently discovered well-preserved handwriting on a wall in the site’s Shaft-Rock House, which was in operation from 1902 until 1967. |
