Snow! Snow!! Snow!!! Marquette and U.P. getting more than their fair share of winter

The hearty folks in the Upper Peninsula have endured an interesting winter as far as snowfall is concerned. Basically, they've gotten a lot of snow. It has come in fits and starts -- from big totals in November to a below normal January to huge amounts in February. This month has been particularly nasty to Marquette. The home of Northern Michigan University along the shores of Lake Superior has been inundated by 61 inches of snowfall in February alone. (That total will increase after Wednesday's snowfall is tallied.) Marquette's 176 inches of snow this winter already is good for its fourth highest total ever, and made for a great snowy gallery from MLive multimedia specialist Joel Bissell. MORE

Michigan Tech used to ship snowballs to Texas for a huge snowball fight

Texas isn't know for its snow. But for more than a decade in the '60s and '70s, students at one Texas university had an annual snowball fight. That's because those attending Michigan Tech were kind enough to share some of the snow that freely fell on Houghton. How did this special tradition begin? A transplant from Texas State University showed up at Michigan Tech. The rest, of course, is history. Luckily, this history is well documented.  MORE
