November 29, 2021 Experts keep describing COVID-19 vaccines as “extremely” effective. So why is a booster shot even necessary? And what additional protection does it offer? Anybody over the age of 18 is now eligible for a third shot of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine six months after their second dose. Meanwhile, those who got the Johnson and Johnson inoculation are encouraged to get a second shot at least two months after the first shot. Vaccines already significantly reduce the chance of COVID infection, hospitalization and death. Booster shots reduce those odds even further, based on preliminary studies. The people most likely to benefit from boosters are 50 and older; people who are immunocompromised, and adults who live in long-term care regardless of age. That’s because those people are at the highest risk of developing severe COVID via a breakthrough case. With a football team built like one of yesteryear — big, physical, and geared toward the run — Michigan pounded the football to the tune of nearly 300 rushing yards, and in the process zapped all of the negative stereotypes that had been clouding the program. Their inability to win the “big” game and beat Ohio State? That argument is no more after Saturday’s 42-27 victory over Ohio State, ending a 10-year drought against the rivals to the south.
