Get ready for these upcoming festivals in Michigan |
Festival season is kicking off across Michigan and there's something in store for almost everyone. An independent film festival returns to Ypsilanti on Wednesday, April 24 for its fifth year and this summer's Bay County STEM Fest is a family-friendly event. One of mid-Michigan’s largest fishing events, the Freeland Walleye Festival, starts this week on Thursday, April 25 and runs until Sunday, April 28. From a jam-packed event schedule including the fishing tournament to community rummage sales, here's everything you need to know about the festival. For music fans, the 19-day Irving S. Gilmore International Piano Festival will bring 200 musicians and 100 events to Kalamazoo between Wednesday, April 24 and Sunday, May 12. The concerts are held at various venues, mostly in Southwest Michigan. |

Michigan’s weed industry topic of new documentary |
On screen: The mid-Michigan marijuana industry will serve as the focus of a new PBS documentary Cannabusiness: Marijuana on Main Street,” will also air on TV in mid-Michigan via Delta College Public Media on PBS at 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 23. The film explores the impact of legal, recreational marijuana on the region. Handmade in the Hills: Students at Forest Hills Northern High School in Grand Rapids have turned a class project into a thriving, self-sufficient business that has sold over 5,000 bars of handmade, all-natural soap over the last two years. Also in business: Michigan Sugar Company's new molasses desugarization plant in Bay City will produce 80 million more pounds of sugar each year, according to Rob Clark, senior director of communications and community relations for Michigan Sugar. |

Now are we done with frost in Lower Michigan? |
Feeling chilly: Lower Michigan's chance of frost isn't over just yet. A cold front sweeps through Tuesday night, bringing in colder air for Wednesday. A clear, calm Wednesday night will set all of us up for a very frosty or even a hard freeze Thursday morning. In the sky: Catch a glimpse of April's Pink Moon tonight. The full moon will occur on the night of Tuesday, April 23 into the morning of Wednesday, April 24, according to EarthSky.org. The the precise time of he full moon’s peak will be 7:49 p.m. Eastern Time on April 23. Quakes: If you live near the Southeast Michigan border to Ohio and thought you felt things shaking, you might not be wrong. The U.S. Geological Survey has confirmed the earthquake registered as a 2.3 on the mb_lg scale and was located about 3.3 kilometers south-southeast from Walbridge, Ohio. |

One of the top 10 cultural scenes in the entire US is in a small Michigan city |
On the map: Marquette, in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, is known for its natural beauty and picturesque landscapes. And now its artistic side; its galleries, museums, festivals and performing arts scene, is getting some national attention. USA Today just ranked Marquette No. 5 in the top 10 Best Small Town Cultural Scenes in the country. In Grand Rapids: ArtPrize has launched its 2024 artist registration period, which is open now through May 31. In addition to artist registration, ArtPrize is highlighting a series of artist grants to help artists fund their “most ambitious projects.” A sign of spring: Now that we have reached late-April, Mackinac Island's faster ferry boats are ready to hit the water. The two ferry companies will ramp up their boat pacing from St. Ignace and Mackinaw City over the next month and will run until Halloween. |

This Northern Michigan beach town has an art trail through the woods |
Scenic route: Ludington has a new art outdoor installation, adding large works from local artists to a popular pathway. The “cARTier Trail” at the popular Cartier Park Pathway features three 4-foot by 3-foot artworks displayed in metal frames along the one-mile loop. Opening day: Many of Michigan's roadside parks will open next week on Monday, April 29. The Michigan Department of Transportation operates 85 roadside parks, most of which close for the winter. On Monday, 77 of them will be open while eight will remain closed until later this year due to maintenance or construction. Great outdoors: If you're looking for your next outdoor adventure, check out Muskegon County’s newest and largest park. Opened in June 2023, the 377-acre Dune Harbor Park sits on Lake Michigan and weaves around two inland lakes that are perfect for kayaking and fishing. |
