July 14, 2020 Michigan residents can face a $500 misdemeanor for failing to wear a face covering in public indoor spaces and in crowded outdoor spaces where social distancing is not possibly. But not all Michigan law enforcement agencies are on board with enforcing the strict mask order signed by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer last week. Some departments have made public statements that they plan to avoid investigating cases involving people who refuse to wear a mask. Meanwhile, businesses are also on the hook for enforcement, potentially facing license suspensions if they are caught allowing customers to disregard the order. MORE A series of bills in the Michigan Legislature would put an increased emphasis on recycling in an effort to divert waste from the landfill. Advocates hope to have a statewide recycling rate of 35 percent by 2025. “We really recognize that just because we’re done with something in our home, doesn’t mean it no longer has value,” said Sean Hammond, policy director for the Michigan Environmental Council. “So that shift in thinking is pretty fundamental and something that we think is long overdue."
