Sports betting could be available at Michigan casinos by football season
A U.S. Supreme Court ruling Monday paved the way for legalized sports betting in each state. On Tuesday, a Michigan Representative suggested sports betting in Michigan could be a reality as soon as this fall. Robert Kosowski, who introduced a bill three years ago to legalize sports gambling in Michigan, said the issue could head to a legislative committee as early as next week. The suggestion that legal sports betting in the state could be in place by football season is not without merit, as Michigan's more than 20 casinos already have some of the infrastructure in place required to take bets. Prosecution's final witnesses take stand as Willis trial wrapping up

A Michigan State police detective testified about a discarded note written in Jeffrey Willis' handwriting that included such items as needles, a hook, vibrators, rope and handcuffs. Each of these items was found in a search of Willis' van during the investigation into the disappearance and death of Jessica Heeringa. A Norton Shores police officer then took the stand to speak about how he knew something "bad" happened when he initially responded to the gas station where Heeringa was working the night she allegedly was abducted. The officers were among the prosecution's final witnesses in its case against Willis in the death of Heeringa. Testimony resumes at 10 a.m., and the case is expected to be in the jury's hands by the end of the day. MORE

Meteotsunamis are a thing and Lake Michigan had two on the same day

Even we Michiganders can be amazed by the enormity of the Great Lakes, and the fascinating weather-related events they produce. For instance, NOAA recorded a pair of meteotsunamis last month on Lake Michigan. Meteotsunamis create sudden spikes in water levels near the shoreline, and are formed by air-pressure changes and disturbances during fast-moving weather events. In our minds, this just adds to the allure of watching a big storm roll in off the lake. MORE

The music behind the memories of the 2018 prom season

It's good to find out what the kids are listening to, if for no other reason than to hear what passes for music these days, and then wonder how is this passing for music these days? Are we right??? Clearly music was so much better in (insert formative year of your youth here.) Anyway, MLive multimedia specialist Neil Blake painstakingly put together a lovely compilation of the top 20 tunes we heard while covering proms across the state this year. Nice to see some "oldies" made the cut. But quick question: When did they produce a new "Stand By Me" cover? MORE
