Whitmer slams 'flawed' budget, Republicans bristle at changes, but state avoids shutdown
 
Well, that certainly seems like it was a close call. Governor Gretchen Whitmer on Monday signed into law all 16 budgets the state Legislature sent her to make the Oct. 1 deadline and avoid a government shutdown. However, along the way, Whitmer didn't forget her line-item veto pen. Whitmer made 147 line-item vetoes that sliced about a billion dollars off of the $59.9 billion budget. But she wasn't done there. Whitmer and her administration then shifted around roughly $600 million in budget funds. Republicans were displeased with her budget maneuvers. MORE

Flood watch, statewide rain kick off October
 
A massive storm system that pounded parts of the western United States with - in some cases - feet of snow has made its way here. MLive chief meteorologist Mark Torregrossa has been tracking this puppy for the past few days. He's calling for plenty of rain across the entire state through Thursday and noted a flood watch went up Tuesday for 14 counties in western and central lower Michigan through tonight.
