Who’s ready to party like it’s springtime? A long-running tradition at Bell’s Eccentric Cafe — snow be damned — is that Oberon Day is synonymous with springtime in Kalamazoo. Oberon Day, a local and statewide holiday, has been the unofficial celebration of the season’s arrival for nearly three decades now. This year’s festivities will commence at 11 a.m. today at Bell’s. The party, highlighted by live music, food and the raising of the Oberon flag, centers on the annual release of Oberon, a seasonal American wheat ale, aka, sunshine in a glass. |

Steamboat lost in 1886 collision found in Lake Michigan waters off Holland |
A search effort success: After nearly two decades of carrying passengers and cargo across the Great Lakes, a steamship that was lost in a chaotic 1886 collision amid heavy fog has been found sitting upright in Lake Michigan about 40 miles off the Holland shoreline. Footage from a remote-operated vehicle (ROV) shows the Milwaukee is still “remarkably intact” after 138 years below the surface, researchers from the Michigan Shipwreck Research Association announced. More in history: The Groves Farm near Ann Arbor was established before Michigan became a state, and its barns are among the oldest in Washtenaw County. Now, the farmstead is being recognized as a national historic site. |

House bill would give Michigan residents priority for reserving state park campgrounds |
First dibs: A newly proposed bill in the Michigan House of Representatives would allow Michigan residents to reserve spaces at state campgrounds earlier than those from outside Michigan. House Bill 5597 was introduced by Rep. Cam Cavitt (R-Cheboygan) and calls for Michigan residents to get a two-week head start on reserving their spots. Accused of violating the PUMP Act: A woman is suing a Grand Rapids bar for allegedly not giving her time to breast pump at work and firing her because of “the time she took to pump milk for her infant.” In health news: Health officials are stressing the importance of protecting against measles as the nation has already matched last year’s infection total for all of 2023. |
