In today's newsletter, Kellogg is splitting up into three separate companies, a look at ways to limit risk while consuming fish and an attorney for an ex-police officer says he is "very confident" a jury will acquit his client in the Patrick Lyoya murder case.

It's hot out there again, but that doesn't mean the water is warm.

With these hot June temperatures we've seen, both yesterday and last week, you would think water temps would be up. While that might be the case for your little inland land, the Great Lakes are still chilly.

According to MLive Chief Meteorologist Mark Torregrossa, the water surface temperatures for most of Lake Michigan and Lake Huron is still in the 50s. But if you take a look here, he will give you a some info on where to find warmer spots, if you are looking to take a Great Lakes plunge this week.

Happy swimming, if you find a good place to jump in. Just remember to check if conditions are safe (especially on the big lake).

Can labels be trusted? Formal complaints filed by the Michigan Cannabis Regulatory Agency against one of the state’s largest marijuana safety testing businesses in May raise questions about the THC potency figures the lab reports, and that ultimately end up on retail packaging labels.

Potential potency exaggeration? THC potency drives sales more than any other characteristic of marijuana, industry insiders say. The higher the potency, the higher the price, in most cases. And with marijuana prices down more than 40%, according to the CRA, how much customers are willing to pay is more important than ever.

Kellogg is splitting up. What does that mean for Battle Creek?

Kellogg splitting into three companies:On Tuesday, Kellogg announced it will divide into a trio of separate companies — one focused on cereals, one focused on snacks and one for plant-based products.

What does it mean for Battle Creek? Corporate headquarters for the snack division will be based in Chicago while the other two companies will remain in Battle Creek, where Kellogg has been headquartered for 116 years.

Profits are up: Kellogg reported 3% global growth last year even as North American profits dropped half a percent due to supply chain issues, a major labor strike and a plant fire, the company said in an earnings report.

Speaking of fish: A 13-foot, 600-hundred-pound fish was recently caught in Cambodia. The stingray is the largest freshwater fish ever caught, according to scientists from the Southeast Asian nation and the United States.

Attorney is 'very confident' jury will acquit ex-police officer in Patrick Lyoya murder case.

Lawyer speaks up: An attorney for former police officer Christopher Schurr said Tuesday that his client is prepared to defend himself against a second-degree murder charge. Attorney Matthew Borgula said that Schurr was justified in the April 4 fatal shooting of Black motorist Patrick Lyoya during a traffic stop.

Court hearing held: Borgula's comments came as he attended a hearing in Schurr's case. Schurr, who is out on bond, did not attend the court proceedings. You can hear what else he had to say in this video from outside the courtroom.

What happened in court? A judge set a July 18 date to hear evidence in the case. The judge will decide then if enough evidence exists to hold Schurr for trial on second-degree murder.
