Cleanup of state's largest Superfund site, which started in 1998, could take 7 more years
 
It is fair to say the Velsicol Chemical Company wasn't a very good steward of the land. It's former plant in St. Louis, 30 miles west of Saginaw, is one of the most polluted and most expensive cleanup sites in the country. The plant closed in the 1970s, leaving behind contaminated soil and DDT leaking into the adjacent Pine River. The company declared bankruptcy in 2002, just four years into a cleanup effort that continues today. MORE
