The different rates: For the trucking industry, it’s a tale of two markets: contract rates and spot rates. About 80% of trucking relies on contact rates. But the remaining one-fifth of the market uses spot rates — one-time fees that hinge on supply and demand. Dropping down: The spot market flourished during the pandemic, but now hauls are slowing down. Van spot rates have dropped 18% since January, and spot rates for reefers —refrigerated trucks — have gone down nearly 20% from $3.59 to $2.89 a mile, according to DAT Freight & Analytics. And FreightWaves called accelerating decline in spot rates “remarkable.” While we're on roads: As Michigan looks to a future with automated tolls, newly introduced legislation would allow the secretary of state to target individuals with unpaid toll fees, who could then risk losing their vehicle registration as a result. |

New Michigan technology better detects cancer in women with dense breast tissue |
The Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit is the first to purchase a new Michigan-developed system approved by the FDA to screen women who have more dense tissue than fatty tissue in their breasts, a common circumstance that complicates cancer detection.
Another possible development: Actinium-225 is an incredibly promising cancer treatment, but researchers don’t know its full potential because there simply isn’t enough of it for large-scale clinical trials. A Lansing company aims to fix that.

‘I was stunned, absolutely,’ says 84-year-old pro-life advocate shot while door-to-door canvassing |
Background: In her years as a Right-to-Life volunteer, 84-year-old Joan Jacobson has encountered her share of people with a different viewpoint. But the conversations never ended with gunfire, as it did Sept. 20 when Jacobson was shot in the shoulder by a resident near Lake Odessa.
How she's doing: Once injured, Jacobson was able to make it to her car and drive about two minutes to the nearby Lake Odessa Police Department for help. She spent 3-4 hours in an emergency room but did not need to be admitted. She claims to be doing better with less pain each day.
The latest: Richard Harvey, 74, has been charged in the shooting. He was arraigned Friday, Sept. 30, in Ionia County District Court on charges of assault with a dangerous weapon, or felonious assault, a four-year felony, careless discharge causing injury, a two-year high-court misdemeanor and reckless use of a firearm, a 90-day misdemeanor.
