As Jan. 6 hearings continue, these 15 Michiganders are charged in the deadly riot.

U.S. Capitol riot hearings: Monday marked day two of the hearings on the Jan. 6, 2021, riots at the U.S. Capitol. Nearly a year and a half later, the country is discussing the insurrection.

Michiganders charged: Of more than 800 people charged so far in the riot, 15 are from Michigan. We have a look at the individuals from our state who have been charged. 

GOP candidate charged: The latest of those charged, Republican gubernatorial candidate Ryan Kelley, was arrested Thursday on four misdemeanors that could send him to prison for four years.

No, the alligator wasn't driving: An alligator was rescued by police after a car chase Saturday. Police wanted to make it clear that the reptile wasn't behind the wheel during the pursuit. Oh, and the alligator's name is "Karen."

Perry Johnson's last attempt denied: A federal court denied the disqualified GOP gubernatorial hopeful's request to halt the printing of Michigan primary ballots, since those ballots don't contain his name. We've been giving you the latest updates on the race as they happen, so we wanted to keep our newsletter readers in the loop.

The cause of SIDS is still largely a mystery. But there are ways to try to prevent it.

Sudden infant death syndrome: It's an unexplained death, usually during sleep, of a seemingly healthy baby younger than 1. It is a diagnosis of exclusion, meaning professionals have ruled out all possible causes. And it's pretty rare. Michigan reported 43 in 2020, the most recent year for which data is available.

One preventative measure:Health authorities most emphasize the importance of safe sleep practices. Safe sleeping campaigns, which began in the mid-1990s and encouraged parents to place infants on their backs, dramatically reduced the prevalence of SIDS.

Gay bars once thrived in Saginaw, but none remain. LGBTQ+ advocates want a revival.

It's been years:For decades, gay bars served as premiere gathering spaces for adults identifying as LGBTQ+. But, in many places, they have disappeared in recent years. Saginaw last housed such an establishment more than five years ago, whereas there were multiple establishments operating at the same time only a decade earlier.

Why did they disappear? The decline in part was the result of the popularity of online dating services as well as the increased acceptance of LGBTQ+-identifying patrons at businesses that once shunned them, said gay advocates. Still, there remains a desire for local establishments where those groups can gather socially.

Pride month continues: If you are looking for a social gathering, Pride events are taking place in Grand Rapids this weekend. The Great Lakes Bay Pride Festival is taking place a week later.
