Where are the healthiest places to live in Michigan? |
Overview: Life is generally healthiest in Northwest Michigan and outside Detroit, in Livingston, Washtenaw and Oakland counties, according to a new data-heavy analysis by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Find your area:Seven of the top 10 ranked counties from the report are found in those two regions, with Leelanau County finishing No. 1 overall for the fifth consecutive year. Wayne County, the state’s most-populated county, was ranked last. See the map here. In housing:On average, Michigan Section 8 applicants wait two years before securing a rental assistance voucher. In a place like Grand Rapids, they are difficult to secure. In smaller towns, there can be slower demand. |

Tentative agreement between GM, auto workers may end 6-week strike |
The latest:A tentative contract agreement has reportedly been reached between the United Auto Workers and General Motors, according to the Associated Press.
GM would be the last of Detroit’s Big Three automakers to announce a tentative agreement after Ford made headway on a labor contract Wednesday, and Stellantis followed suit on Saturday.

Enrollment ticks upward at Michigan colleges, though behind national trends |
Michigan’s higher education institutions overall saw slight increases in enrollment in the fall 2023 semester. State enrollment ticked upward by just less than 1%, the same rate as the Midwest region and worse than the national average of 2.1%, compared to 2022. Focusing in: Western Michigan University has its sights on being the third-highest ranking university in the state for student success – trailing only the University of Michigan and Michigan State University. More in education: Kalamazoo Public Schools will be taking an “aggressive” approach to making sure students are reading at grade level. |

Jahmyr Gibbs helps Lions pull away from Raiders on MNF |
6-2: Running back Jahmyr Gibbs exploded for 152 yards on the ground, accounted for another 37 yards on five catches through the air, plus scored a touchdown that helped propel the Detroit Lions to a 26-14 win against the Las Vegas Raiders. An update: Jim Harbaugh disputed a recent Wall Street Journal story regarding his pending contract extension with Michigan, suggesting the story was inaccurate in its depiction of where things stand with the school. In the NHL:The Red Wings earned an overtime win against the New York Islanders 4-3 at the UBS Center. |

Up to 3 inches of snow taking aim at Lower Michigan |
Here we go: A whirling, compact weather system will bring some snow across part of Lower Michigan. In the area where the snow comes down moderately the snow could stick on the grass for a short time.
Already feeling it: It’s beginning to look a lot like winter in the U.P. as multiple places saw measurable snowfall. In the western U.P., the first foot of snow of the season was recorded at Bergland Dam. A different way to be warned: A winter index has been developed which incorporates many of the dangerous features of a winter storm. This index could give you a feel as to the total danger level for any given winter storm. |
