 Michigan’s northwest Lower Peninsula is home to counties with some of the state’s highest COVID-19 vaccination rates, like Benzie County. But it’s also home to counties where the rates are well below average. There’s a distinct and intriguing pattern in the northern Lower Peninsula. From Ludington to Mackinaw City, the counties along the Lake Michigan shoreline are all above the state average and two of the eight -- Leelanau and Grand Traverse -- rank first and second in percentage of vaccinated residents. Meanwhile, the interior northern Lower Peninsula has some of the counties with the lowest vaccination rates -- including Osceola, Mecosta, Newaygo, Ogemaw and Oscoda. The biggest tornado started at 5:49 p.m. on Saturday in Port Austin in northern Huron County, according to an alert from the National Weather Service. The speeds reached an estimated 120 mph, and the tornado was approximately 400 yards wide at maximum and traveled about seven miles, the alert stated. While there were no fatalities reported, six people suffered injuries. The NWS rated the tornado an EF-2, which is considered strong. After getting a sponsor’s exemption into this week’s Rocket Mortgage Classic at Detroit Golf Club, Mack could get PGA Tour status for two years with a victory. In total, the National Weather Service confirmed four tornadoes across the state, with the one in Port Austin recorded as the largest.
