Revisiting the lawsuit that led to seismic changes to Michigan prep sports seasons
It has been more than a decade since the Michigan high school sports landscape experienced a monumental shift. Most of today's prep student athletes probably don't remember that traditionally in Michigan, girls basketball was in the fall and volleyball was in the winter. (The seasons were flip flopped for boys and girls golf and tennis, too.) A lawsuit spurred by a pair of concerned parents in the name of equal treatment for girls gave us the prep season schedule we have today. The court-mandated ruling was based on Title IX. However, after 10 prep seasons of this new normal, several questions remain: Have the changes proven worthwhile? Who has benefited from the ruling? Has anyone or any sport suffered?

What Trump's new trade deal with Mexico could mean for Michigan

President Donald Trump has long been a critic of the North American Free Trade Agreement between the U.S., Mexico and Canada. (He isn't alone, as politicians from both sides of the isle have been critical of the deal.) And just this week he announced he is making good on his promise to rework NAFTA, beginning with the unveiling of a preliminary trade agreement with Mexico. Details of the deal remain scarce, and we still don't know where our biggest trading partner Canada fits into the mix. However, here's an initial look at how a new trade deal could affect us here in Michigan. MORE

Law to make struggling readers repeat 3rd grade looms over M-Step scores

The results are rather chilling. Only 44 percent of Michigan third-graders passed the M-Step reading test administered in April. And now, starting this school year, a new law goes into effect which requires students with poor reading performance to repeat the third grade. Should we be prepared for smaller fourth-grade classrooms next year? The Michigan Department of Education says, no. But with such low scores, it will be interesting to see how rigorously this law will be interpreted and/or applied. MORE

Red Wings preparing for season without Henrik Zetterberg

Henrik Zetterberg's playing days with the Detroit Red Wings appear to be all but over. The longtime team captain recently admitted he will not be healthy enough for training camp or the start of the season. General manager Ken Holland said Wednesday that the team expects to put him on long-term injured reserve. If this is the end, Zetterberg's presence on the ice and in the locker room will definitely be missed. He was the consummate pro and one of the few remaining members of the Red Wings 2007-08 Stanley Cup Championship squad. MORE
