Child poverty is down in 82 of Michigan's 83 counties since 2010. |
Positive stats:Child poverty, child abuse and teen births are down in Michigan over the past decade, according to new data released by Michigan League for Public Policy. We have a full look at the numbers here.
Why it's so important: "During the first five years of life, the brain and body develop so rapidly. It really sets the architecture of development,” said Kelsey Perdue, the Kids Count in Michigan director. “If during that time kids don’t have enough to eat, they’re stressed, they’re neglected? That can have lifelong consequences for them."
Zooming in on Grand Rapids:Thirty-three percent of children under the age of 17 in Grand Rapids lived in poverty in 2019, which is down from 44% in 2010. |
