 From CNN to NBC, the nation's attention was focused on Portage, Michigan Thursday as Pfizer prepares to ship its COVID-19 vaccine. After hours of presentations and discussion around the safety, effectiveness and distribution of the vaccine, the FDA’s Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee voted 17-4 Thursday evening to recommend approval of the company's COVID-19 vaccine for emergency use. Michigan state Sen. Sean McCann, D-Kalamazoo, said the latest achievements by Pfizer highlight the area’s history of scientific and medical innovation. He said there’s a great sense of pride knowing that friends and neighbors are the ones punching in to work at the Pfizer plant and bring the world a solution to the pandemic. A moisture-laden storm system is going to move out of the southwest U.S. and pass through Lower Michigan. The position of a storm’s center is a great way to peg where the heaviest snow will fall. The heaviest snow falls just northwest of the track of the storm center. The line between mostly rain and mostly snow looks like it will lay out across central Lower Michigan. ►We have the ingredients for a 1978-style blizzard this winter  Michiganders are losing their minds over the opening of the state's first Michigan’s first Portillo’s, a Chicago-style Italian beef restaurant. The plan is to open in Sterling Heights this spring. Besides its famous Chicago-style Italian beef sandwiches, Portillo’s serves Chicago-style hot dogs, char-grilled burgers, cheese fries, salads, Italian sausages and more.  For 65 years, the ferry known as “The Mighty Huron” has been a staple of Mackinac Island life, motoring residents and visitors between Michigan’s most popular tourism destination and its mainland ports. More recently, it’s been Star Line ferry’s winter workhorse. Star Line holds the winter contract for the island, and the steel-hulled Huron is the ferry that runs during the winter and early spring seasons. As in past years, Mackinac Island ferry fans were delighted recently to see pictures showing The Mighty Huron decked out for the holiday season.
