December 7, 2020 When the health department showed up at D&R’s Daily Grind Café in Portage to hand deliver a letter warning the restaurant to close down, owner Dave Morris had a clear response. “Let’s get ready for the war, boys,” Morris said. The war over dining in at Michigan restaurants is well underway, with more than a dozen restaurants reopening in defiance of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services order prohibiting in-person dining for three weeks. Their motives to reopen in clear defiance varies greatly, so we spoke with Michigan restaurant owners to find out why.
