20 days until Christmas 🎄 |
Okay, we are less than 3 weeks away from Christmas, let's lock down on some Christmas spirit. First, we have a story on Pamela Rasmussen, one of the world’s most renowned ornithologists, who tried to identify all of the birds in “The Twelve Days of Christmas.”
Check out Michigan's top three Christmas candies along with a ranking of the best and worst Christmas candy of 2022. And let me tell ya, Peeps deserve to be in the "worst" category.
Cranking the Christmas spirit up, here are opportunities to watch "The Nutcracker" in Grand Rapids or witness the "Immersive Nutcracker" in Detroit. Lastly, the Coast Guard Christmas ship has arrived in Chicago with 1,200 trees from Michigan. If you don't celebrate or enjoy the holiday, don't fret, the rest of this newsletter is Christmas-free. |

Michigan’s gas tax will increase in 2023 |
At the pump:Michigan’s gas tax is going up 1.4 cents per gallon starting Jan. 1, thanks to an automatic adjustment written into state law. The increase will move the state gas tax from 27.2 cents per gallon to 28.6 cents per gallon, according to a notice from the Michigan Treasury on Thursday, Dec. 1. A law from the Gov. Rick Snyder era requires the gas tax to increase each year. Starting in 2022, the formula calls for an increase of either 5% or the inflation rate – whichever is lower. Because inflation has hovered around 8% in the past year, the gas tax will only go up by the maximum 5% in 2023.
More in transportation: The budget-friendly flight prices from the COVID-19 pandemic are nearly gone. Every Michigan commercial airport has seen prices rise in the past year. Yet, the prices at Michigan’s most expensive airport are three times more expensive than the average flight at the cheapest airport. |

DNC panel greenlights Michigan’s early-state status for 2024 presidential primaries |
A different order: The Democratic National Committee’s Rules and Bylaws Committee approved a new order of presidential primary elections that would set Michigan as the fifth state in 2024. What happens if it goes through: The proposed order will follow the recommendation made by President Joe Biden. Other states and territories would then hold primaries after the first Tuesday in March, as Michigan had previously done.
Speaking of change: Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s cabinet is being shaken up for her second term, the Governor announced in a press release. The heads of the Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE), the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD), the Veterans Affairs Agency (VAA) and the Department of Transportation (MDOT) are all stepping down. |

Brilliant fireball reported over Michigan, 12 other states |
As Pitbull once said: ..."FIREBALL!"... The night skies over parts of Michigan and a dozen other eastern U.S. states were lit up by a brilliant fireball Thursday night, according to the American Meteor Society.
The American Meteor Society so far has received more than 800 reports of a fireball seen around 7:30 p.m. on the evening of Thursday, December 1. The sightings covered a range stretching more than 700 miles north to south, from Michigan’s Saginaw Bay to South Carolina. Nearly two dozen reports came from eastern Michigan, where sightings took place in or near Ann Arbor, metro Detroit, Flint, Saginaw, Bay City and the Thumb. In weather news:November had some wild weather swings with record high temperatures earlier in the month. Just 5 days before record snowfall, Michigan had record warmth at many cities. Mark goes through all the wildness and weather history making here. |
