Michigan to require people on food assistance to work   It has been 16 years since Michigan last required able-bodied citizens who receive food assistance to prove they are working. Starting Oct. 1, they will have to do so or risk losing those benefits. Work requirements are a part of the federal Supplementary Nutrition Assistance Program.
