Wildfire smoke health risks: Should you wear a mask outdoors in Michigan?

With smoke from the Canadian wildfires continuing to billow into Michigan, government agencies are again warning residents about the dangers of being outside when the air quality has been impacted like it's been this week.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the smoke from these fires can cause irritation to the eyes, nose and throat. The smoke can also impact your respiratory system and harm those with ongoing heart and lung problems.

Here are several ways to stay safe as smoke, haze and pollution linger in the sky.

Thousands in Michigan could lose SNAP benefits under new rules, research shows

Cutting back: A bill passed to raise the debt ceiling puts 28,000 Michiganders aged 50 to 54 years old at risk of losing food benefits unless they work, according to analysis from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.

More in politics: Michigan's school retirees need to wait nine months before returning to fill open positions under current law—a wait time far longer than many other states in the country. That time period isn't helping short-staffed schools across the state.

Closing the gap: Nearly 1.7 million Michigan households are eligible to get a discount on their monthly internet bill thanks to the federal Affordable Connectivity Program.

How one Michigan city plans to cut train-related traffic delays

What's the problem? Points where railroad tracks intersect with roads can cause blocks in vehicle and pedestrian traffic. They can also be dangerous, causing more than 2,000 collisions annually and slowing emergency response times during train crossings.

A solution is coming: That’s why the city of Monroe, like other communities around the country, plans to separate the rail and road to eliminate those crossings. The Federal Railroad Administration announced a $570 million grant to fund the removals across 32 states, including two in Michigan.

Drivers, beware: For those planning to travel this weekend, there are more than 68 new projects or special events that will result in lane closures throughout the state. Here's a look at some of the significant projects to account for this weekend.

Air quality, smoke could get worse in Michigan Friday as fires spread north of Lake Huron

Michigan basketball player makes history as a bison ranch intern in Montana

Home on the range: Will Tschetter made history last month. He was the first-ever intern at the North Bridger Bison ranch in Wilsall, Montana. And, while nearly impossible to verify, he was almost certainly the first Michigan basketball player to work on a bison ranch during his college career.

Bronco the Mac: Cool convoy to cross Mackinac Bridge this weekend

Rev your engine: Ford Bronco enthusiasts will parade across the Mackinac Bridge for the inaugural Bronco the Mac event Friday. A convoy of about 120 Broncos will cross the Mighty Mac Friday morning, traveling from St. Ignace south to Mackinaw City and then back between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m.

Weekend trip: Picnic areas, live music, and sparkling waterfront views – this Holland boardwalk has everything you need for a beautiful summer afternoon by the lake.

A special gem : In recent years, Leland Blue stone has become the subject of much coveting and curiosity, a darling among Michigan rock collectors, and even a focal stone in Michigan-made jewelry.
