Detroit Tigers' eyes land on Mize with No. 1 pick in MLB draft
The Detroit Tigers had the first pick in the MLB draft for the first time since 1997. And, just like 21 years ago, the Tigers went with a hard-throwing right-handed pitcher. Detroit selected Auburn junior Casey Mize with the No. 1 overall pick. Mize is said to be so polished, it isn't out of the question that he could pitch out of the bullpen this year for the big club. Ideally, he will be a part of the Tigers' starting rotation in a couple of years. Tigers beat writer Evan Woodbery put together a list of five things to know about the newest Tiger. MORE

Look up trend of opioid prescriptions in your county

There were enough opioids dispensed in Michigan in 2017 to give every resident 127 opioid pills. The good news is that opioid prescriptions are down 11 percent from 2015's high-water mark of 10.8 million prescriptions. Better computer tracking and federal recommendations to seek opioid alternatives have helped get overall numbers trending in a better direction. However, not all Michigan counties are created equal. Our database allows for searching the numbers for individual counties. MORE

Can these final stops unseat some of the early favorites? Look for results early next week! MORE

Beilein to Pistons isn't that crazy of a notion

Michigan men's basketball coach John Beilein interviewed last week for the Detroit Pistons' vacant head coaching job. At first glance, a 65-year-old with no NBA experience doesn't exactly scream match made in hoops heaven. However, the Pistons could do - and have done - worse. As for Beilein, sure he's got a great thing going at U-M, but what coach isn't at least a bit curious about reaching the highest level of sport? And with an unresolved contract extension situation, it looks like a pretty smart move to kick some NBA tires this offseason. MORE
