Title IX at 50: Amendment for equity was a total game-changer, but there is still work to do |
Five decades of Title IX: On June 23, 1972, President Richard Nixon signed into law an educational amendment prohibiting sex discrimination in any program or activity receiving any type of federal financial aid. Now 50 years later, Title IX is celebrated as an unmatched milestone in female athletics. Stigmas, stereotypes and urinals in girls locker rooms: While sports writer Lee Thompson looks into the vital changes that came with Title IX in the story linked above, there's more to the story. So he followed it up with this important piece on the work that still needs to be done in the name of equity. Before Title IX: "Society saw girls as having a completely different makeup than boys,” said Fran Danek, the Hall of Fame softball coach at Bay City Central from 1970-2001. “We weren’t supposed to be athletic or be good at throwing a ball or running. It wasn’t a thing girls did." |

Ted Nugent, famous rocker and a member of the far-right Oath Keepers, makes an endorsement. |
An endorsement in the Michigan governor's race:Ted Nugent, the famous rock ‘n’ roll performer and right-wing provocateur, has endorsed Kevin Rinke for governor. It's far from the first time the Michigan native has been vocal about state politics. A lifetime member of the Oath Keepers: In a connection that had not been previously reported, it was revealed that Nugent is a lifetime member of the far-right group, which has been thrust into the national spotlight for their central role in the riot at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. In a press release from Rinke's campaign, Nugent said “Kevin Rinke as governor would bring us back to the best state in the nation representing God, family, country, Constitution, the Bill of Rights, the 10 Commandments, the Golden Rule, that amazing Michigan work ethic and law and order.”
