Driver who struck, killed two Make-A-Wish bicyclists sentenced to 70 years in prison |
"A small amount of closure": The woman convicted of second-degree murder in a crash that killed two Make-A-Wish bicyclists and injured others will likely spend the rest of her life in prison. Mandy Benn, 44, was sentenced by Ionia County Circuit Judge Ronald Shafer on 13 charges related to the July 30, 2022 crash. She will serve a minimum of 70 years in prison with a maximum sentence of 120 years. More in crime: A Michigan teen has been charged for encouraging the suicide of a Texas boy while online gaming. |

Something new: As Michigan continues to rank dead last in government transparency, Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson announced Tuesday her department has unveiled an online portal to make requesting state documents easier for the public. Also in politics: Kristina Karamo ran for chair of the Michigan GOP to embolden local Republicans, but as the state party’s financial distress continues 10 months into her tenure, defenders are becoming detractors. For public interest: WK Kellogg Co. is reversing a decision to shift some production from Michigan to Canada – a move that will prevent layoffs and create new jobs at a Battle Creek cereal manufacturing facility. |

The University of Michigan’s football program is the athletic department’s largest cash cow, and that is reflected in the salaries of the coaches. The numbers: The 2023 salary report for all 55,279 university employees was released Dec. 8, and seven of the eight highest earners in the athletic department are football coaches, at least in base salary.

Sleeping Bear Dunes has a new digital park pass |
Starting this week, visitors to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore will be able to purchase a park entrance pass online as well as in person. Speaking of the outdoors: You can climb snow-capped dunes and cruise the Lake Michigan shoreline on a fat-tire bike at Silver Lake State Park starting Friday. If you're in southwest Michigan: Want to get outside and possibly win prizes while exploring new places? The Holiday Hike Challenge gets you out in nature through the end of this year. |
