Dead cops, dead civilians: The price of untreated mental illness
One of the deadliest threats to Michigan law enforcement officers is mental illness. An MLive analysis of police reports, court records and newspaper archives shows 30 percent of police officer killings that occurred within the state in the last 20 years were linked to mental health issues. It works the other way, too. Records show 38 percent of civilians killed by police since 1998 had been diagnosed with or exhibited signs of some type of mental illness. It's a public safety concern across the country, but there simply aren't enough resources for those who need help, according to experts. "We have to prioritize what we put money into, and this is just one of those things," said Detroit Police Chief James Craig, whose police force has seen three officer deaths in as many years involving people with mental illnesses. MORE

Final grades of football season for MSU and UM
hat
We are handing out all kinds of grades for the 2018 football season. MSU's defense gets a solid A for a season that saw them rank as the nation's leaders against the rush. The rest of the Spartans, though, didn't fair so well. For the Wolverines, well, it was a 10-win season, so there really aren't any horrible grades to hand out, but there aren't any perfect grades here either. How would you grade these teams, now that the season is over?  MORE

Photographer Russell Lee took his camera to Iron County and captured the turbulent time. MORE
