June 7, 2021 As public health experts throughout Michigan work to convince hesitant populations to get vaccinated against COVID-19, state-level elected Republicans and Democrats have taken widely different approaches in how they handle the subject. Many of Michigan’s Democratic elected officials have openly shared their vaccination status, posting vaccine selfies to social media or publicly discussing the importance of vaccinations with their constituents. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer held press conferences for both of her COVID-19 vaccine doses. By contrast, many Michigan Republicans have been hesitant to talk about vaccinations other than emphasizing an individual’s right to make their own medical decisions. Both the Michigan House and Senate have formally recognized June as Pride Month for the first time in state history, according to the key backer of the measure. Senate Resolution 60 and House Resolution 122, sponsored by Sen. Jeremy Moss and Rep. Tim Sneller recognizes June 2021 as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ) Pride Month in Michigan. Both were adopted via voice vote last week. The resolutions outline the history of Pride Month, acknowledge ongoing struggles the LGBTQ community has faced and recognize the contributions of Michigan’s LGBTQ residents to the state. READ Extra unemployment programs aren’t the main cause of Michigan’s workforce shortage, state leaders insisted as they announced a “Back to Work” initiative Friday to connect job seekers and employers. The new campaign touts a handful of existing state programs on a new webpage. Programs include a job postings website, a free program to help employers implement COVID-19 safe practices, virtual job fairs, child care aid and more. “Unemployment insurance benefits provided a wealth of economic relief to Michigan,” the state said in Friday’s news release. The Pioneers finished as national runners-up in 2018 and 2019, then saw the 2020 campaign wiped off the slate by the coronavirus shutdown.
