In today's newsletter, a teen pleads guilty in the Oxford high shooting, a guide to cheap dates across Michigan and we could be in for a sloppy winter this year. |
I really love all of Michigan's towns, both big and small. |
I really enjoy visiting American cities. They all have their own personalities. The people have their own little languages, with regional phrases only the locals know. It's like entering a new world each time you visit a new city. Here in Michigan, we've got a good mix of cities and small towns. We have lots of local identities scattered throughout our two peninsulas. I could list things I adore about each place I've visited here in Michigan. They all deserve awards.
But two small towns in Michigan got a special shoutout recently, making the Architecture Digest list of the most beautiful small towns in Michigan. If you are like me, you will probably try to guess the two towns before you read the article.

Shooter gives details: Ethan Crumbley picked out the 9mm Sig Sauer SP 2022 pistol he would eventually use to kill four classmates and injure seven other victims, including six students and a teacher. And he gave his father, James Crumbley, the money to buy it, the teen shooter admitted Monday. Monday's hearing: The details came out as Crumbley pleaded guilty to 24 felonies, including four counts of first-degree murder, a count of terrorism causing death, seven counts of assault with intent to murder and 12 counts of felony use of a firearm.
In other courts news:The hearing for a former Grand Rapids police officer who is charged with killing Patrick Lyoya during a traffic stop, is scheduled for this week. Officials are putting a priority on courthouse security for the hearing. |

Cochlear implants can be life-changing, but few get them. A Medicare expansion could help. |
Life-changing technology: Cochlear implants improve sentence recognition, often significantly, for people with severe hearing loss who find hearing aids no longer affective. One 2020 U.S. study found 91% of 96 participants at 13 institutions showed 15% or more improvement on a word test in their implant year in six months. Few receive them: Less than 10% of candidates in the U.S. receive the surgery, according to a decision memo from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Large patient financial responsibilities for implantation and related services are one reason. The rate could improve. More from our public interest team: Michigan Tech researchers are turning plastic waste into food for the U.S. military.

NOAA's winter forecast targets Michigan for a sloppy, slick winter. |
A wild winter ride: The winter forecast released by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration shows that Michigan may be in for a wet winter. And parts of the state might suffer through colder-than-normal temperatures. See the full report on the forecast here. This week's forecast: Sure, it's nice to know what to expect down the road, but what about this week's weather? Don't worry, Mark Torregrossa has that covered right here. (And you'll want to have your hoodies on hand.)
Look at this!We can't all make it up into a helicopter to get an aerial view of Michigan's peak fall colors. But the Coast Guard did and they took along a photographer, who was nice enough to share some photos. |

I hope you are enjoying this stretch of warmer weather before temps start to drop again tomorrow.
