This year's 'back to school' feels 'back to normal' |
Different than back to school 2020 and 2021, 2022 is more reflective of years before COVID-19 protocols. Online options, mask requirements, and social distancing are fading away and this year seems more traditional. Hear from the schools and students themselves in Muskegon, Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti, Kalamazoo, Saginaw, Grand Rapids, Holland, Jackson, and Bay City.
In higher education, we are seeing more people on campus at Western Michigan University and Grand Valley State University. And we even captured the magic of students moving into their dream school at the University of Michigan.

What to do when your retirement savings account tanks |
Temptations: During these tumultuous times, people are more likely to want cash on hand, and pulling back on retirement savings often feels like the quickest way to do so. Let's rewind: However, Chief Investment Officer Nick Juhle wants to press pause on the doom and gloom, and remind people if they had pulled out in March 2020 then they would have missed the gains made in 2021. His advice is to never try to time or game the market, especially when it comes to long-term savings plans.

Michigan awarded $6.8M federal grant to boost access to jobless aid |
Where it's going: The Michigan Unemployment Insurance Agency was awarded nearly $6.8 million to help underserved communities access jobless aid. Equity grants from the U.S. Department of Labor aim to help workers who historically struggle to apply for benefits. A reminder: The MUIA has paused collections on pandemic overpayments. More than 391,000 workers who were told to repay their benefits won’t face new wage garnishments or intercepted state tax returns through Oct. 31.
Advice for employers: At a time when businesses across all industries are struggling to hire and retain staff, a job recruiter who works with small to mid-size companies in Michigan has some tips for employers to keep top talent. |

Michigan man started his own internet provider. Now he’s got $2.6M to bring broadband to neighbors |
Solving a problem: After hearing Comcast needed $50,000 to extend cable to his home that’s a short drive west of Ann Arbor, and frustrated with his other internet options for high-speed internet, Jared Mauch, a network architect, took matters into his own hands. Helping others: On top of his day job, he founded his own telephone company. That allowed him to bring fiber-optic cable directly to his house, in the process connecting his neighbors through his brand-new internet service provider.
More features: For the first time in Grand Haven Township Fire/Rescue’s 76-year history – Angela Headley and Sloan McLean became the first all-female crew to work a full shift.
